Why the Luberon Is Ideal for Eagle Watching

The Luberon is one of the most remarkable regions in southern France for observing eagles and other large raptors. Its open landscapes, rocky cliffs, and protected natural areas offer ideal conditions for species such as Bonelli’s Eagle, Short‑toed Eagle, and Egyptian Vulture.

Sightings are most frequent in the morning and late afternoon, when light and thermal conditions are optimal.

1. Petit Luberon (Lauris – Mérindol)

The Petit Luberon is one of the region’s most important habitats for the Bonelli’s Eagle, one of France’s most threatened raptors. A resident pair nests on the cliffs and hunts across the open landscapes stretching toward the lower Rhône plain. This area is a priority conservation zone managed by the Luberon Regional Natural Park.

2. Orgon – Plateau Overlooking the Durance River

This plateau is an excellent place to observe Bonelli’s Eagles in hunting flight. The area is also frequented by the Short‑toed Eagle, a specialist reptile hunter. The Sentier de la Pierre trail offers multiple panoramic viewpoints and is the best route for birdwatching in this sector.

3. Natural Areas of the Luberon Regional Park

Several natural zones support a rich diversity of large raptors:

• Cedar Forest of the Petit Luberon
• Gordes Plain
• Grande Montagne (Rustrel)

These habitats are regularly visited by Bonelli’s Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Short‑toed Eagle, and Eurasian Eagle‑Owl.
